How to solve common problems with accessing library resources online

Security Certificate Issues

When connecting to some of the Library's databases, you could see a security warning, either when you first connect or at some stage during your session.

For Library databases, it is safe to ignore the warning and proceed.

What to do:

Google Chrome

Chrome generates an error message like the one shown below.

Why do I get these warnings?

Security certificates exist to protect private data and are commonly found on sites that require a login. A secure site encrypts your details and offers privacy. Browsers expect a site to be governed by only one security certificate and multiple certificates can be a security issue.

When you connect to one of our databases, you are connecting via EZproxy. This service is primarily to provide remote access. EZproxy has its own security certificate to protect your details when you log in from home. On campus you do not need to login.

When you connect to a database, your connection 'carries with it' the Ezproxy certificate. Most of the time that is fine, but for the few databases that have a certificate of their own, there is a conflict between the database certificate and the Ezproxy certificate. However, there is no security risk as both are valid and that is why continuing to the site is OK.
