Finding Materials in Our Special Collections

Books and microfilm are listed in our online catalog and can be searched for using a variety of criteria, including subject, keyword, author and title. However, the majority of materials in the collections (photographs, postcards, trade cards, objects, pamphlets, committee minutes, course catalogs, etc.) have not been cataloged. Currently, the best way to find out if we have materials that might be useful to you is to contact us. Due to limited staffing, it is recommended that individuals interested in the college archives or local history collection contact us before coming in. Materials in special collections cannot be borrowed and we reserve the right not to make some materials available due to their fragile nature.

We recently purchased collection management software from PastPerfect and have begun entering information about and images of our uncatalogued materials.  PastPerfect allows users to search records using keywords, and, when available, view pictures of the items online. Adding materials to PastPerfect will be a gradual process, but will allow us to make our collections available to users near and far.

The library’s collection of over 200 Victorian trade cards, the majority of which were distributed by local businesses, are the first items that have been entered into the database. Information about the cards, as well as images, can be seen in the Objects section of our PastPerfect catalog.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to limited staffing, it is recommended that individuals interested in the college archives or local history collection contact us before coming in. The supervisor of these collections, Linda M. Kaufmann, can be reached via email at l.kaufmann@mcla.edu.  The reference department phone number is 413-662-5325.

College Archives

The College Archives contains materials dealing with the college from its start as a normal school to the present. Materials can be divided into two categories: historical and organizational.  Historical items include photographs, yearbooks, school newspapers, scrapbooks, catalogs, ephemera and blueprints. Organizational materials, both past and present, include records of various academic and non-academic departments, organizations and groups associated with the college, as well as correspondence, faculty publications, course schedules and descriptions, policies, event programs and catalogs. The archives do not include personal student or personnel information. The archives are not open for browsing and any individual interested in viewing archival materials or needing information contained in the archives should consult  Linda Kaufmann at 662-5325 or via email before coming to the library.

Materials in the collection cannot be borrowed in person or through interlibrary loan.  Local history books in the collection can be searched through our online catalog.
