With an increase in state funding to libraries, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) has been able to add five new research databases to its current statewide offerings. The new databases have been added to the Databases A-Z list on the Freel Library website.

  • Opposing Viewpoints: Contextual information and opinions on hundreds of today's hottest social issues. This database features continuously updated viewpoints, topic overviews, full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, statistics, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites organized into a user-friendly portal experience.

  • Science Database: A growing resource of 7.3 mllion full text articles from over 1600 sources, supporting the needs of students studying applied and general sciences.

  • HeritageQuest Online: Provides access to more than 4.4 billion historical and genealogical records. This essential collection of sources has coverage dating back to the 1700s and can help people both find their ancestors and discover a place's past.

  • Career Transitions: Provides guidance and essential activities to both current job seekers and those investigating new career options. Key features include resume and cover letter creation support, interactive interview practice, and tools to match previous work or military experience to potential career paths.

  • Research Companion helps students do more effective scholarly research and supports educators as they teach the core information literacy principles of finding, evaluating, and using information.

MCLA's digital subscription includes most nyt.com content, with a few exceptions.
  • Most games are not included.
  • E-reader (Kindle, Nook, etc.) editions are not included.
  • Access to some of the archive (1923-1980) may be limited. (The library does have most of those years on microfilm, which, if you haven't used it before, is a real treat.)
  • Your MCLA New York Times account no longer works with the NYT Food app -- this is now a separate, paid subscription.

The NYT in Education website (faculty focused site that includes 16 discipline-specific areas of study, discussion prompts, learning outcomes, Instructional Strategies, and Co-Curricular Activities)  is a separate website and requires its own username/password.  You must register for access (and use your @mcla.edu email address) here:

We hope that you find this subscription useful! If you experience any issues while activating or using your subscription, please contact the library.
