What is Flipster?

Accessible via a web browser or custom apps made specifically for Apple devices, Android devices, and the Kindle Fire tablet, with Flipster you can download magazines to read offline, anytime, anywhere.

Download the Flipster App

To download the free Flipster app, search the Google Play store for "Flipster."

Finding Your Library

After downloading the app to your device, you must find your library before searching for magazines.

To find your library:

  1. Open the Flipster app on your device.
  2. Tap Get Started.
  3. Tap Allow if you would like to enable the app to use your location to suggest libraries near you that offers Flipster. Otherwise, tap Don’t Allow to manually search for libraries by using a library name, postal code, city, or state/province.
  4. Tap the Log In button for your library.
  5. Enter your MCLA login and tap Login.

After logging in, you are taken to the Explore screen of the Flipster app, displaying the titles available from your library.

Using the Flipster App

Finding Your Library

  1. Open the Flipster app on your device.
  2. Tap Get Started.

  4. Tap the Log In button for your library.

Searching for Flipster Magazines

To search for magazines in the app:

  1. Tap the Magnifying Glass icon search icon in the upper-right corner of the Explore screen.
  2. Tap the search field and enter your keywords, such as title, publisher, or category.
  3. As you type, Flipster displays titles related to your keywords.

Tap the Download icon download icon to download an issue to your device, or tap the cover to learn more about it.

Browsing Flipster Magazines

To browse magazines in the app:

Browse from the All Magazines area displayed.

Tap Categories in the upper-left corner of the Explore screen to select a particular category of magazines to display.

Tap the Information icon information icon below the cover to learn more about a title, including a brief description as well as the available back issues. 

Tap the Download icon download icon for a title you would like to download.

My Shelf

The My Shelf screen of the Flipster app displays the issues you have downloaded to your device.

  • When a title is downloaded, it appears as new icon in your library.
  • Tap the Sort menu in the upper right-hand corner to view all magazines sorted alphabetically or by the most recently downloaded.
  • Tap the trash can icon trash can icon to delete a magazine from the app.

Reading an Issue

Swipe your finger left or right to flip through pages of the magazine.
Tap the icon toc icon in the upper right-hand corner to view the digital table of contents with links to each article.
Tap the icon full screen icon in the upper left-hand corner to read the magazine in full screen mode. Tap it again to exit full screen mode.
Tap My Shelf to return to your library of magazines in the app.

Text View

  • Tap Text View to read a text only version of an article with images and ads removed.
  • When multiple articles appear on a page, you can select the text only version of a specific article from a drop-down menu.
  • Tap Page View to return to the page view of the magazine.

Q. What is Flipster?
A. Flipster is a next-generation digital magazine distribution service which lets users can access their favorite magazines from a variety of publishers through their local libraries. Accessible via a web browser or custom apps made specifically for Apple devices, Android devices, and the Kindle Fire tablet, with Flipster users can download magazines to read offline, anytime, anywhere.

Q. Do I need to pay for this service?
A. No, this service is free courtesy of the MCLA library.

Q. Are back issues available?
A. Yes, back issues are available.

  • To access back issues on your desktop or laptop computer, open the most recent issue of a magazine and select the All Issues menu item in the right column to see all available issues.

  • To access back issues on your mobile device, tap on the info information icon icon associated with the magazine you are interested in. From the Details Screen, you can browse all available back issues. (Available now in iOS, coming soon in Android)

Q. Do I need a mobile app to view magazines on my mobile device?
A. No, using your mobile browser, you can access Flipster and read magazines from your mobile device with an internet connection or 3G/4G connection.

Q. Is there a mobile app I can use with Flipster?
A. Currently, there is a mobile app for Apple devices, Android devices, and Kindle Fire tablets. It can be downloaded from the iTunes App store, Google Play Store and from this FAQ for the Kindle Fire.

Q. Can I search within a magazine?
A. Yes, both the desktop and mobile versions of Flipster support keyword searching within a magazine. You can also search across all issues accessing the contents gallery feature. There is currently no search feature on the mobile app.

Q. Can I print from a magazine?
A. Yes, printing is available when reading a magazine on a computer, but not from a mobile device or the mobile app. The print button is located towards the bottom of the right-hand menu when viewing a magazine on a computer. The available print options are determined by the publisher. You may be able to print a single page, a range, or none at all.

Q. Is there a limit of how many magazines I can download to the app?
A. No, you can download as many magazines as you’d like.

Q. Do the issues I download to the app expire?
A. Some select titles will expire and will need to be deleted from your device. These titles display an expired icon and appear grayed out when no longer available to read. Select weekly titles may expire in 2 days while select monthly or seasonal titles may expire in 7 days.

Q. After an issue expires, can I download it again?
A. Yes, simply return to the Explore Screen within the app and re-download the magazine.

Q. How do I delete an issue?
A. Tap on the trash can icon trash can icon in the lower right corner of each magazine cover to delete it.

Q. What is the % number in the lower left corner of each cover image?
A. When you first download a magazine but haven’t read any of the contents, you’ll see a new icon label in the lower left corner of each magazine cover. Once you begin reading the magazine, the new icon label is removed and replaced with a % number that tracks how much of the magazine you’ve read.

Q. Can I bookmark articles in the Flipster app?
A. Yes, you can bookmark articles in Flipster magazines and access them at any time from the Bookmarks link on the My Shelf screen.

To bookmark an article:

  1. Locate an article you would like to bookmark.
  2. Tap the bookmark icon bookmark icon at the top of the viewer screen.
  3. Type a bookmark name in the field provided or tap the article name to use it as the bookmark name.
  4. If desired, add a Tag to your bookmark by tapping the New link and adding the tag text.
  5. Select a tag color and tap Save.
  6. Tap the Save button to save your bookmark to the app.

You can delete a bookmark for an article by tapping the bookmark icon bookmark icon again.

Q. Can I add multiple libraries in the Flipster app?
A. Yes. However, if you toggle between libraries you have added to the app, the available magazines will dynamically change to reflect each library’s Flipster collection.

To add another library:

  1. Tap the Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. (Gear icon)
  2. Tap Add a Library.
  3. Tap the location icon above your device's keyboard or enter a library name, postal code, city, or state/province to find a library near you that offers Flipster
  4. Tap Search.
  5. Tap the Log In button for your desired library.
  6. Enter your Flipster login values (user ID and password, patron ID, etc.) and tap Login.
