An introduction to using the library

Finding Books & EBooks

  • Use the Library Catalog to find books and e-books that are available at the MCLA library and from our partner libraries in HELM. For information on downloading ebooks, see our guide.
  • Use the Commonwealth Catalog (ComCat) to find books that are available statewide in Massachusetts. You will need your library login (the same one  you use to request books in the MCLA HELM catalog) to request an item. Contact us if you need help logging in.
  • Use WorldCat to search for books and ebooks held by libraries worldwide. Use the 'Request on Interlibrary Loan" button to request the item from another library.

Finding Books in the Stacks

The library uses Library of Congress classification and call numbers. Library of Congress groups books together that are about the same subject area so if you find a book that is appropriate for your research, look on the shelves around it to find more.

Call numbers that begin with A thru Z (except for P) are on the 3rd floor.

Call numbers that start with N are in the quiet study area to the right at the top of the stairs to the 3rd floor.

Call numbers that begin with are on the 1st floor basebament level.

Call numbers that start with JUV are in the Children's Room on the 1st floor basement level.

Call numbers with REF are on the main floor.

Magazines, journals, microfilm, newspapers and DVDs are all on the main floor.

All About eBooks

About ebooks-----Did you know?... 

  • They can be read both on and off campus on any computer
  • You can print portions of ebooks
  • eBooks are BOOKS not websites and count as books when doing citations
  • You can find ebooks using the library catalog
  • You can also search ebooks directly using the eBook Academic Collection interface, which will give you more search options and more functionality
